In a world short on attention, progressing trumpet students need a method book that is focused, concise, enjoyable, and challenging. I wrote this book to meet that need. It presents a carefully curated sequence of material. Concepts are introduced progressively, developed, and reviewed regularly. The repertoire in this book creates a series of teachable moments that you can engage with in lessons, as you help your students improve their technique, range, endurance, reading ability, and musical sophistication.
Volume 1 is geared towards students who have completed two volumes of a beginner band method. In this volume, a tuba student will:
- Build range from top space E to G, and slightly beyond.
- Build endurance through material of increasing length and complexity.
- Develop syncopated rhythm ability, and reading in 6/8 time.
- Develop lyric playing using progressively challenging tunes.
- Gain ability in the keys of Bb, D, A, and E.
- Be introduced to swing rhythms and blues scale patterns.
After completing Volume 1, a trumpet player will be strongly prepared to audition for middle school regional honors ensembles, and capable of being a solid contributor in most high school bands.
